The Women`s Council NGO, Chaired by Gulnara Karimova, and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) have signed an Annual Work Plan, funded by UNFPA as part of the Country Cooperation Program between the Government of Uzbekistan and UNFPA for the years 2010-2015. As a result, in order to support the initiatives of the Women`s Council and "In The Name Of Life!" National Breast Cancer Association, the trainings for Uzbek specialists working with women at different stages of cancer were conducted.
The training project is a logical extension of “Campaign 14” charity auction conducted within the Art Week Style.uz-2010. All the proceeds from this campaign were allocated for the treatment of 14 women diagnosed with breast cancer.
The first training, held from 18 to 22 October, was on the theme “Counseling of Patients Diagnosed with Breast Cancer”, conducted by Galina Tkachenko, Doctor of Psychology at Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center. The audience consisted of 25 attendees of the Uzbekistan Psychologists Association including those who have never worked with patients diagnosed with cancer. Within five days, Russian specialist dwelled upon a range of subtleties of the given topic, acquainted them with the entire chain of aspects to do with psychological support of patients with breast cancer.
October 25-29, the second training course ran on “The Adoption of Screening and Services” for radiologists, the oncology clinics staff from all areas of the country. These days, Galina Korzhenkova, a radiologist, high caliber specialist, Senior Fellow of Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center`s Radiology department shared experiences with Uzbek colleagues. Training covered topics related to breast physiology and anatomy, mammographic image standard, mammographic studies, quality evaluation, breast cancer studies including recognition of benign and malignant tumors, and screening practice. The trainings were wrapped up with practical workshops at the clinic. After both training sessions all participants were awarded certificates.
Since 2009, the “Women`s Council” NGO has been carrying out large-scale projects supporting women with breast cancer. Women`s Council Public Association “In the Name of Life” started operating in the framework of Women`s Assembly. The creation of the National Breast Cancer Association “In the Name of Life” followed consequently. The Association is constantly working to raise awareness about Prevention, Early Detection and Treatment of Breast Cancer and Rehabilitation of Women Diagnosed with Breast Cancer and the empowerment of diagnosis and treatment. The organization not only promotes awareness among the population but it also deals with issues related to supporting professional medical personnel capable of providing effective assistance to all women affected by the breast cancer. Trainings and courses conducted by foreign counterparts are some to mention. Through these workshops, the valuable experience of foreign professionals is transmitted to domestic physicians and used to help our compatriots.
