Over 28,000 women across Uzbekistan submitted applications in 2010 to participate in the Woman of the Year National Contest organized annually by the Women’s Council. The selection rounds have been under way throughout Uzbekistan since November 25. Winners have been identified in Namangan, Jizzak, Ferghana, Andijan, Navoi, Bukhara, Surkhandarya, Khorezm, Samarkand, Syrdarya regions and the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The final is scheduled for December 20.
Now in its third year, the "Woman of the Year" was given the goal of increasing women`s involvement in the country`s public life. It seeks to motivate and support women in regions, especially those caring for their families and raising children, and to recognize women who have achieved considerable success in an environment conducive to raising women`s social status.
The project is geared for women living in Uzbekistan irrespective of their age, occupation and interests. The contest consists of three stages: application, selection rounds in regions, and the republican final. The contests are judged based on a number of criteria that reflect their social and financial activity as well as social and economic significance. The jury is composed of local culture and arts professionals. The winner is awarded Woman of the Year Title and gets a statuette and a special prize from the organizers.
