The international conference Traditional Medicine in a Modern Society. Its role, implications, perspectives held on February 1 in Tashkent concluded with a signing of a Memorandum on the Establishment of the International Association of Traditional Medicine. The conference was attended by specialists on healthcare and traditional medicine from Austria, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, India, Latvia, Korea, Japan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The conference participants unanimously concurred that Gulnara Karimova would become the honorable president of the new Association. The main office of the Association is expected to be opened in Uzbekistan, the homeland of Avicenna (Abu Ali ibn Sino), a prominent scientist, physician, and one of the founders of modern medicine.
The Association of Traditional Medicine of Uzbekistan, founded recently within the Womens Council, was one of the organizers of the Conference. It is a professional association whose activity will be based on research and expert assessments. The organization has been given the goal of promoting traditional medicine, popularizing traditional methods of treatment and prevention of disease, and expanding international cooperation in traditional medicine. Other organizers include the Fund Forum, Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan, and the Academy of Traditional Medicine of Uzbekistan.
During the international conference speakers included scientists and experts such as Professor Umberto Solimene, Director of the Center for Research on Medical Bioclimatology, Biotechnologies, and Natural Medicines of Milan University, Director of the WHO Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine (Italy); Professor Guo Changqing, Head Medic of the Acupuncture Academy of Beijing University for Traditional Chinese Medicine (China); Professor Zhang Xueliang, Director of Training Center of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences (China); Michael Frass, Professor of Medicine, Head of Outpatient Unit, Homeopathy in Malignant Diseases Division of Clinical Oncology (Austria); Sanae Ohshiro, specialist on Biomedicine Japanese Traditional Medicine Kampo, President of the company Tida Orchestration (Japan); Dr G. Geetha Krishnan MD, Senior Consultant, Integrative Medicine (India); Dr. S. V. Tripathi, Head of Ayurvedic Research Institute (India); Professor Gustav Jurgen Dobos, Chair for Complementary and Integrative Medicine, University of Duisburg-Essen (Germany); Gennadiy Malakhov, TV host, advocate for healthy lifestyle, author of numerous books on healthy lifestyle (Russia); Maris Revalds, Vice-president of the Latvian Association of Cosmetics and Cosmetology (Latvia); Ljuba Evstatieva, Ph.D, Associate Professor, Institute of Botany of BAS (Bulgaria); Professor Do Byung Jun, Professor of Oriental Medicine at Korea University (Republic of Korea); Nelya Mametova, WHO expert on herbs, Scientific Secretary of the Committee for Pharmacopoeia at the Department for Medicine Provision of the Ministry of Health of Kyrgyzstan; Yusuf Nuraliev, Director of Abu Ali Ibn Sino Dushanbe Pharmacology Institute (Tajikistan), and others. Roughly 300 people attended the conference.
