Honorary chairperson of the Youth Media Council Gulnara Karimova participated in a Youth Media Forum which brought together in Tashkent roughly ninety representatives of youth TV studios and press centers, active members of “Kelajak ovozi” Youth Initiative Centre, and awarded grants in the form of technical equipment to TV studios, TV and radio stations during the Media Festival “Ozod yurt to’lqinlari” (Waves of a free country). The Festival brought together around 200 people from media organizations, nongovernmental and national media, public organizations, heads of ministries, international organizations and diplomatic missions accredited in Uzbekistan. The events were dedicated to the Press and Media Day in Uzbekistan.
Youth media forums organized by the Fund Forum and the NAEMM bring together in Tashkent young journalists, editors, cameramen working in media projects across Uzbekistan. Seminars and training sessions are organized in an effort to help improve their professional skills and development grants are made available. This time the Media Forum which was titled “Journalistic objectivity: facts, balance of opinion, responsibility. Journalistic subjectivity: emotions, convictions, position” lasted for two days. Young journalists working for “Kelajak ovozi” youth TV and radio studios, youth press centres and Kelajak Press Project attended training sessions and master classes taught by leading local and international specialists. Representatives of youth TV studios and print media projects had an opportunity to attend training sessions taught by international experts: Simon Ross, one of France’s foremost film directors, producers and cameramen (TF1 and Fox Television Channels) and Svetlana Hivirova, associate professor at the Institute of Business and Law (Russia).
That same day Hotel Intercontinental hosted the Media Festival “Ozod yurt to’lqinlari” (Waves of a Free Country) which is held annually under the aegis of the National Association Electronic Mass Media (NAEMM). At the awards ceremony Gulnara Karimova handed over 80 million UZS worth of equipment to youth TV studios as well as grants to nine regional TV stations and three radio stations.
Representatives of international organizations – UNESCO, Conrad Adenauer Foundation and the OSCE – also provided special prizes to journalists. More specifically, UNESCO Representative for Uzbekistan Jorge Espinal and Gulnara Karimova awarded several journalists for active contributions to the coverage of HIV/AIDS problems. Conrad Adenauer awarded a Diploma to Gulnara Karimova for significant contributions to the development of youth journalism and strengthening of cultural cooperation between Germany and Uzbekistan.
