The fifth day of the Art Week “Style.Uz 2010” presented a string of events, including a master class on the use of software in carpet weaving, a few runway shows, and Guli jewelry presentation.
The fifth day of the Art Week started with a master class by specialists from Germany and India who focused on the use of computer designing in carpet making. Handmade carpet weaving, an ancient applied art, has a history that spans thousands of years. That said, this ancient art has embraced modern technologies which are being used successfully by masters of carpet making. This was demonstrated during the master class by German and Indian professionals who introduce to the audience two latest software programmes, “eXPIoRUG.net” and “Galaincha-computer graphics and innovation in carpet weaving”, which have provided an answer to the question of how modern technologies can help to visualize designing ideas on a computer, to select colors and combine them, and to see with the help of photos how the carpet will look in a particular room.
The master class was followed by a catwalk show by Domenico Vacca and his wife Julia Vacca. The pair presented stunning designs which combined western and oriental elements. Amongst grey, blue and beige tones on European style jackets, the viewers could see local ikat patterns inscribed into the fabrics. These included jackets, trousers and dresses adorned with eye-catching ikat patterns. Clearly, both the European and Asian viewers were delighted by this unique blend.
Brioni, another trendsetting fashion label, showcased evening dresses of various lengths as well as trendy coats. The designs mainly contained black, grey and brown tones mixed with a few bright purple and wine-red details. The men in the audience had a chance to see stunning views of tuxedos combining classic details and some extravagant patterns and accessories.
The fifth day of the Art Week culminated with the Festival of National Dress at the Centre of National Arts. Over a hundred designs from 16 collections by 18 local designers were paraded on the runway, reflecting colourful Uzbek traditions from various regions of the country. The show featured a diversity of evening dresses made from national fabrics adras, atlas and silk with shiny stones. Head scarves and long dresses with bright patterns resembling the One Thousand and One Nights, coupled with dresses of the colors of the pomegranate, henna and walnut, accentuated the beauty of oriental women.
The Guli collection designed by Gulnara Karimova, showcased during the Festival, made for a highlight of the show. This part of the show featured ikat-patterned denim and variations of stylish jackets from national fabrics combined with wide trousers, and provided a good example of the synthesis of European and Asian styles.
Later that day, Guli brand presented its jewelry collection. It may be difficult to talk about this “parade” of jewelry masterpieces. One is better off seeing it with their own eyes to get a full picture of this art. Each piece contained original creative ideas and solutions. The show presented a harmonious blend of western and oriental jewelry traditions. Speaking of western traditions, these were also represented at the show by a music performance of Chico & the Gypsies, created by one of the founders of the famous music group Gypsy Kings. In sum, this jewelry-cum-music show became another memorable event.
