Chess greats to play friendly chess match in Tashkent

On March 27, the reigning World Champion Viswanathan Anand of India and the 17th World Champion Rustam Kasimjanov of Uzbekistan will play a rapid match in Tashkent. The event will be organized by the Fund Forum headed by Gulnara Karimova and Uzbekistan Chess Federation.

The match will consist of four rapid games, and each player will be given 25 minutes with 10 seconds added to their times after each move. Also, the two chess greats will hold training games with leading junior chess players of Uzbekistan on March 28-29 at the National Chess Club.

The Fund Forum works actively to support many types of sport, including chess. For instance, the Youth Creativity Centers set up by the Fund Forum in Tashkent and Samarkand offer free chess training classes and organize chess tournaments among the Centers as well as Independence Day tournaments, quarterly Candidate of Master of Sport qualification tournaments and other events. In May 2010, a trainee of “Yangi avlod forumi” Children’s Creativity Center won the First place in an open chess championship held in Karpov Chess School in Moscow (Russia). The Fund Forum also co-organizes chess competitions such as “Golden Autumn” children’s chess festival, New Year tournament, etc.

Viswanathan Anand, an Indian chess grandmaster born in 1969 in Madras (India), has been the World Chess Champion since 2007. His other accolades include 15th World Champion, international grandmaster (1988), FIDE World Champion (2000-2002). In 1998, he published a book titled “My Best Games of Chess”. Anand is a six-time winner of the Chess Oscar, an international award given to the best chess player every year. He is currently the world’s only chess player with the highest accolade in three different categories. In 2007, he was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second highest civilian award, making him the first sportsperson to receive the award in Indian history.

Rustam Kasimjanov, born in 1979 in Tashkent, is the 17th World Champion, international grandmaster (1997), FIDE World Champion (2004-2005) and the winner of the Rapid Championship of the 16th Asian Games held in Guangzhou, China, in November last year. Kasimjanov is also the author of a book on chess for children. He regularly plays simultaneous chess games with top junior players in Uzbekistan and is the leader of the national team of Uzbekistan. For his victory in the world championship in 2004, Kasimjanov was honored with the Amir Timur Medal.
