“Asrlar sadosi 2011”: Day Two culminates in gala concert

The second, final, day of “Asrlar sadosi” Festival of Traditional Culture included a series of exciting events, including a roundtable titled “Film festivals – a phenomenon of contemporary global culture”, National Dress Festival, book presentation, and grant awards ceremony for spiritual education institutions in Uzbekistan. The final day of the Festival culminated in a major gala concert, with Gulnara Karimova presenting awards to the Festival laureates.

Roundtable “Film festivals – a phenomenon of contemporary global culture” was held at Grand Bukhara Hotel. The roundtable also discussed the role of film festivals in the development of world cinema as well as the role of festivals as the crossroads of traditions and national specifics of cinema in different countries and different cultures. More specifically, those gathered focused on the upcoming Tashkent International Festival of Contemporary Cinema to be held in September this year. The roundtable was attended by both local and international cinema professionals, including Peggi Chiao, producer, film critic and jury member of over 50 international film festivals (China); Zhou Qiyue, film director and script writer (China); Svetlana Hokhryakova, film critic, member of “Nika” National Academy of Cinematography Art, and member of the Russian Union of Cinematographers (Russia); Gulnara Abikeyeva, film expert, film critic and art director of Eurasia Film Festival; Valeriy Nikolayev, film director and actor (Russia); and prominent Spanish actress Irene Visedo among others.

The evening part of the Festival agenda included a National Dress Festival. Medieval Kukeldash Madrasah played host to the Festival during which Uzbek fashion designers demonstrated clothes worn by men and women in days gone by as well as oriental costumes with modern twists. The guests, designers, models and volunteers were greeted by Professor Gulnara Karimova, the chairperson of the Fund Forum`s Board of Trustees and author of the project.

The National Dress Festival was followed the presentation of the book “Masterpieces of Architectural Epigraphy in Uzbekistan” published by the Fund Forum and an awards ceremony during which Gulnara Karimova handed grants to 10 spiritual educational institutions. Held as Juybori Kalom Madrasah, the event was attended representatives of Uzbekistan Muslim Board, heads and teaching staff of religious schools, madrasah students from throughout the republic and journalists.

“Asrlar sadosi 2011” culminated in a major gala concert at Bukhara`s Poy-Kalon Square. The gala presented barnstorming performances by folk music groups and solo singers in what was a demonstration of Uzbekistan`s traditional and contemporary music culture. Eighteen folk groups from all over Uzbekistan greeted the multitude of guests gathered for the major gala which kicked off with exotic sounds of karnai music instruments. Highlighting the traditions of oriental hospitality and Uzbek generosity, girls clad in colorful national costumes passed around sweets and Uzbek flat circular bread. Toward the end of the concert, Gulnara Karimova handed awards to the Festival laureates.
