American breast cancer specialists lead training session for Uzbek colleagues

From May 2 through May 5, twenty-five local breast cancer specialists attended a training session titled “Breast Cancer in the Light of Evidence-Based Medicine. Modern Aspects of Epidemiology, Diagnostics, Treatment and Prevention” led by leading American experts at Tashkent`s Dedeman Hotel – the first time this sort of training has included local professors to enable them to pass on newly gained information to students at medical schools.

The training sessions were led by Jo Anne Zujewski, the head of Breast Cancer Therapeutics, in the Clinical Investigation Branch of the Cancer Therapy Evaluation Program (CTEP) of the National Cancer Institute, and Julie Gralow, the director of Breast Medical Oncology at Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and a professor in the oncology division of the University of Washington School of Medicine. The two professionals have dedicated their lives to fighting breast cancer, have been involved in research and caring for patients, and have authored numerous scientific publications on breast cancer.

The project is part of the work plan signed by “In the Name of Life” National Breast Cancer Association and the UNFPA funded by UNFPA as part of the Country Program of Cooperation for 2010-2015 between the Government of Uzbekistan and UNFPA to support initiatives of the Women`s Council and the National Breast Cancer Association.

In October 2010, Tashkent hosted two training sessions geared for Uzbek breast cancer specialists under cooperation with UNFPA and the Program of Breast Cancer Prevention, Early Detection and Rehabilitation of Women Diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The training session “Psychological Training for Patients with Breast Cancer” was led by medical psychologist Galina Tkachenko of the Blokhin Russian Cancer Research Center. For five days she familiarized the participants with subtleties in psychological support of women diagnosed with breast cancer. Another training session focused on issues related to breast cancer physiology and anatomy as well as mammographic imaging standards and evaluation of mammographic research.

The Women`s Council oversees a series of major projects to support women with breast cancer. In April 2009, “In the Name of Life” Association of Women was set up within the Women`s Council, which led to the establishment of “In the Name of Life” National Breast Cancer Association. The Association works to raise population awareness of breast cancer early detection and treatment and to broaden detection and treatment opportunities. Also, the Women`s Council and “In the Name of Life” Association work to address issues related to medical professionals able to provide effective help to those affected by breast cancer. To this end, the organizations arrange training sessions designed for local professionals led by foreign colleagues and enable local medics to gain skills and experience provided by international colleagues. These training sessions are expected to increase the number of local breast cancer specialists ready to provide effective help to women living with the disease.
